For parents and teachers
Captain Emmy's games are made for children aged 8 to 12 to play on their own, so they're designed to be safe without you needing to hover. Here's what you might want to know.
Common questions
Are there ads or in-game chat?
No. There are no ads, no links out to the web, no chat and no accounts. Your child can't talk to anyone or buy anything by accident through an ad.
What do the games know about my child?
Nothing. Map Hunt doesn't ask for internet access, so it can't send anything anywhere. It saves scores and settings on the device so it remembers them between games, and that's all. The Map Hunt privacy policy has the details.
Does it need the internet?
No. Map Hunt works anywhere: in the car, on a plane or on a school tablet with no Wi-Fi.
What age is it for?
8 to 12 is the sweet spot. Players need to read the questions, so younger children enjoy it most with a grown-up alongside. Beginner level sticks to the big, well-known places, and Advanced will stretch most adults.
Can we use it at school?
Please do. Map Hunt covers the locational knowledge and map skills in England's Key Stage 1 and 2 geography curriculum: continents and oceans, the UK's countries, seas and cities, the countries of Europe and the Americas, the Equator and the Tropics, compass directions and grid references. A hunt takes a few minutes, and the daily hunt makes a good starter for a lesson.
Can brothers and sisters share a device?
Yes, though for now scores and the chosen level belong to the device rather than to each player.
Is it on iPhone and iPad?
Not yet. We're starting with Android, and we'd like to bring the games to Apple devices later.
How do I reset my child's progress?
Clear the app's storage in Android's settings (Settings, then Apps, then the game, then Storage), or uninstall and reinstall it.
I found a mistake on the map
Thank you! Borders, names and facts are tricky to get right. Please email us with the place and what looks wrong, and we'll fix it in the next update.
Get in touch
Questions, ideas, bug reports or a mistake on the map: email hello@captainemmyscove.com. We read everything, though we're a small crew, so a reply can take a few days.
Please don't send us your child's personal details. If they'd like to suggest a place for Emmy to visit, a first name is plenty.
